MS53 + Power Moves Gymnastics: A One-of-a-Kind Opportunity in Far Rockaway

Middle School 53 is proud to be the only middle school in Far Rockaway offering students access to high-quality gymnastics training—thanks to our unique partnership with Power Moves Gymnastics and Fitness.

Founded by Queens native and former competitive gymnast Candice Walker, Power Moves began as a mobile program serving local fitness centers and youth organizations. Today, it has grown into a full-scale operation with state-of-the-art facilities in Queens Village and Valley Stream.

Through our exclusive connection with Power Moves, MS53 students have the incredible opportunity to train in a professional gymnastics facility with experienced coaches—something no other middle school in our area offers. The Power Moves coaching team brings over 20 years of combined experience, with backgrounds as USAG (United States Association of Gymnastics) gymnasts and instructors. They work with athletes of all skill levels, from absolute beginners to advanced competitors.

This partnership allows our scholars to explore a dynamic sport that builds strength, confidence, and discipline—all while experiencing something truly special outside the traditional school setting.

M.S. 53 Track Team

MS53 & Rising New York Road Runners: Where Our Students Run to Win

At Middle School 53, our partnership with Rising New York Road Runners (RYR) has turned running into more than just exercise—it’s a pathway to success and confidence for our students. RYR is a free, nationwide youth running program designed to make physical activity fun, accessible, and rewarding for kids of all ages and abilities.

Here at MS53, we’re proud that dozens of our students regularly compete—and excel—in RYR races, with many earning medals and placing 1st or 2nd in their categories. This success reflects their dedication, hard work, and the strong support system built through the program.

With easy-to-follow activities, access to world-class running events, and exciting incentives like gear and equipment, RYR helps our students develop the skills and confidence they need to stay active for life—whether on the track, the field, or beyond.

We invite our entire community—educators, parents, and neighbors—to join us in encouraging the next generation of runners to lead healthy, active, and successful lives.

Boys and Girls Basketball: Team Sport

MS53 Basketball – Built on Heart, Hustle, and Championship Dreams

At Middle School 53, basketball is more than a sport—it’s a source of pride and school spirit. We proudly field both boys' and girls' teams made up of student-athletes from 6th to 8th grade, and we compete every year in two competitive leagues: one during the school day and another in our after-school program.

Our teams go head-to-head with schools across Queens, bringing energy, teamwork, and determination to every game. Last season, our boys' team made it all the way to the Semi-Finals, and our girls' team reached the P-01 Championship, proving that MS53 is a force on the court.

With multiple opportunities to compete, develop skills, and grow as leaders, our basketball program helps students build confidence both on and off the court—all while chasing playoff spots and championship titles.

M.S. 53 Volleyball: Team Sport

MS53 Girls Volleyball – Power, Precision, and Teamwork

At Middle School 53, our Girls Volleyball team brings energy, skill, and spirit to every serve, set, and spike. This fast-paced game challenges players to communicate, think strategically, and work together as a team—skills our athletes build every time they step on the court.

Our team is made up of dedicated, determined students who are learning the fundamentals of volleyball while growing their confidence and leadership. Through structured practices, team-building activities, and in-school scrimmages, players sharpen their technique and develop a strong sense of camaraderie.

Whether it’s mastering the perfect serve or diving for a save, MS53 girls play with heart. We're proud to offer a volleyball program that empowers young athletes and prepares them for future competition—both on and off the court.

MS53 Baseball – Building Skills, Confidence, and Team Spirit

At Middle School 53, our baseball program is growing fast—and so are our student-athletes. MS53 Baseball gives students the chance to learn the fundamentals of the game in a fun, structured, and supportive environment. From swinging the bat to running the bases and making key plays in the field, our players are developing not just athletic skills, but also confidence, focus, and teamwork.

While we’re not competing officially just yet, we’re laying the foundation for future success through regular practices, intrasquad games, and skill-building drills. Our goal is to prepare our team for competitive play while fostering a love for the game and a strong sense of sportsmanship.

Whether it’s their first time picking up a glove or they’ve been playing for years, every student has a place on our team. At MS53, we’re not just teaching baseball—we’re building future players, leaders, and teammates.

M.S. 53 Soccer

MS53 Soccer Program – Building Champions On and Off the Field

At Middle School 53, soccer is more than a sport—it’s a source of pride and purpose. Through our MS53 Soccer in Schools initiative, students have the chance to build athletic skills, grow as teammates, and develop confidence in a supportive, structured environment.

Our team trains hard, plays with heart, and brings a winning mindset to every match. Each year, we proudly compete in the District 27 Soccer Tournament—a competitive event we helped create to unite local schools through sportsmanship and school spirit.

With experienced coaching, a focus on teamwork, and a commitment to student development, the MS53 soccer program helps our players grow physically, socially, and emotionally. We don’t just play—we compete, we lead, and we win.
